© MMV James Bryant, this site is dedicated to Keven Bryant (1964-1975) who knew the pleasures of fishing but was not given the time.
A small number of birds (ducks, geese, coots and swans) will take bread and other bait if presented on the surface.
If a small bird approaches within about 3 metres
(10ft) radius of your bait then quickly reel it in.
It’s unlikely that you’ll hook a bird, but please be careful and if you do don’t panic.
For small birds reel in slowly and when it's in arms reach (never enter the water) hold it with wings closed, ideally wearing gloves or use a towel (see pic).
Carefully release hook (never use barbed hooks) and check the bird is free of line. Not retrieving the bird and cutting the line is the very last resort so please don't do it. Call the number on the permit if you need help.
