The parts of a hookYour hooks are literally the only point of contact between you and the fish. Therefore, look after them as one day they may repay your kindness with a personal best catch!

The pic opposite shows all the main parts of a hook and remember that at Trow you must use barbless hooks only.

I never buy spade hooks unless by mistake. So unless you can tie them be careful as it's easily to make the mistake of buying spades rather than eye hooks.

Hooks come in varying sizes with 2 being the biggest down to 18 (smallest). You can't go too wrong if you remember to match the hook size to the bait size. For Trow, I find hook sizes of 10, 12 or 14 ok, but I may go to a size 8 or even 6 if fishing in weed for large carp.

If you have a favourite hook that has served you well then keep it sharp by using a carborundum stone on it, but use only barbless hooks at Trow. See also related item use of a bubble float.
