A knot holds the hook to the line and so it must be tied correctly. When the line breaks it's the knot that gives way, ssuming your line doesn't have any abrasions on it.
Knots are your achilles' heel and for each knot your line's strength is reduced by about 10%.
There're many different knots to learn and unless you're a sailor, it can be mind boggling to try to master them all. Therefore, my strategy is to learn a couple of knots that if tied properly will serve you well.
The first knot is a simple eyed hook knot (see pic). You can wet the line first before tying the knot to lubricate it, if you want. Thread your line through the hook's eye, then twist the free end 3 times round the main line, up through the loop holding the hook, then go back down through. Pull tight and trim any excess line.
