Vortices are a little bit more difficult to explain but once you see them on the surface at Trow all will be revealed.
When a large fish such as a carp swims, its tail (Caudal fin) produces the thrust to push it through the water.
This may cause water to spin (vortex) in a circular motion and you can see evidence of this rising to the surface (left pic).
If you see these on the surface at Trow then you'll know that a large carp is swimming nearby as small fish cannot produce visible vortices.
Vortices occur when a body moves through a medium such as water or air and the next pic shows an example of this in clouds high above the Earth.
