Your line and hook are the two most important items of your fishing tackle. So treat them with respect as the experience of hooking a big fish and then your line breaking can be soul destroying.
First the science...the breaking strength of line is measured in pounds (lb). Technically, this is wrong as the unit of force is the Newton, but we wont go there!
Some anglers wrongly believe that the strength of their line determines the maximum weight of fish that they can catch. So a 10lb line would only land up to a 10lb carp. This is wrong. Due to Archimedes Principle you can catch much bigger fish. It's possible to land a 20lb carp on 4lb line, although you may have to play it very carefully and landing it could take ages! Go for 8 to 12 lb line at Trow Pool.
Your line's strength is reduced by about 10% for every knot and abrasions will also weaken the line, so check it regularly. See also the use of a bubble float.
