THIS newt was found during a clean up of the weed in April 2007 and we carefully put it back into the water near to where we found it.
I'm not an expert on Newts but this is probably a smooth common one (Triturus Vulgaris). An adult newt can spend anything between 1 and 210 days a year in the water. While in the water they feed on shrimps, water lice, insect larvae, water snails and frog tadpoles. On land they tend to feed on insects, worms and slugs.
They can live for an average of 6 years, although it is possible for a lifespan of 20 years to be attained. They are nocturnal and spend the day hiding under large stones or compost heaps and they prefer standing water with plenty of weed - sounds like Trow Pool!
